Abstract

This comprehensive article delves into the crucial initiative undertaken by the Patients for Patient Safety Foundation (PFPSF) to promote patient safety and enhance the quality of healthcare.

In a world where medical errors rank among the top causes of death and disability, PFPSF is championing the cause of patient-centered care. The organization’s mission, supported by over 400 hospitals and diagnostic clinics, aims to educate patients and caregivers about their rights, roles, and responsibilities in healthcare. PFPSF equips them with best practices, gleaned from global experts, to prevent or mitigate harm effectively. Additionally, PFPSF facilitates engagement and knowledge exchange between healthcare providers and patients to collaboratively identify solutions for improved and safer outcomes.

The article underscores the importance of this initiative in bridging the gap between patients and healthcare providers, ultimately fostering a safer and more patient-centered healthcare environment. It highlights the benefits for both patients and healthcare providers and emphasizes the significance of learning from patient experiences to drive continuous improvements in healthcare delivery. The article concludes by emphasizing the imperative need to educate the patient community about their rights and responsibilities in healthcare, making patient-centered care an integral component of a safer healthcare ecosystem.

Introduction

Medical errors rank among the top 10 leading causes of death and disability worldwide. According to a survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every 10 patients suffers harm while receiving care in hospitals, and as outpatients, 4 out of 10 patients experience harm.

Patient safety is a critically important aspect of healthcare and is the focus of considerable attention within the healthcare ecosystem. Organizations such as CAHO, NABH, ISQua, JCI, WHO, hospitals, and medical practitioners are working tirelessly to reduce preventable harm and enhance both clinical and service experiences. However, the most significant stakeholders in healthcare, the patients themselves, are notably absent from this endeavour.

Patients, including their families, possess valuable insights derived from their own experiences with illness or caregiving for loved ones. Regrettably, this wealth of knowledge largely goes unrecognized and untapped. Barriers to capturing this knowledge include demographic diversity, language barriers, health illiteracy, blind faith in healthcare providers, and a lack of time or awareness.

There is a pressing need to raise awareness and improve communication between healthcare providers and patients. The Patient and Family Perspective on Safety and Feedback (PFPSF) initiatives aim to address these challenges.

Patient Safety is the core of our mission at the Patients for Patient Safety Foundation (PFPSF), which is supported by CAHO and has the endorsement of over 400 hospitals and diagnostic clinics.

The objective is to foster a patient-centred culture within the healthcare system and promote patient community involvement in taking charge of their own care. The practical aims encompass:

  • Educating patients and their caregivers, imparting knowledge regarding their rights, roles, and responsibilities in medical care.
  • Equipping them with best practices, specific recommendations, and methods to prevent or mitigate harm, drawn from the expertise of organizations like WHO, researchers, and quality and safety authorities, presented comprehensibly and straightforwardly.
  • Facilitating engagement and knowledge exchange between healthcare providers, patients, and their caregivers to collaboratively identify solutions for improved and safer outcomes to prevent future incidents.

The intended recipients encompass a broad spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds, including civic organizations, businesses, individuals regardless of their health status, families, caregivers, community groups, non-governmental organizations, healthcare providers, and the general public. The outreach spans across the entire geographical landscape of India and offers resources and information in regional languages. Additionally, it establishes connections with international outlets that provide exemplary practices.

Moreover, PFPSF has established a website containing many guides and information within its Health Library. It addresses frequently asked questions and guides individuals through a secure Patient Journey from recognizing symptoms and receiving a diagnosis to undergoing treatment and post-care support.

The outreach initiative involves regular emails, newsletters, engagement on social media platforms, publication in print media, creation of infographics, and dissemination of messages through WhatsApp, in addition to organizing conferences and webinars on specific topics.

This organization operates independently and is overseen by a Board of Trustees. Dedicated teams create content, research, and manage outreach efforts. The website, social media profiles, and email platforms for mass communication are used to preserve and disseminate knowledge. Additionally, they actively host webinars and conferences on specific healthcare topics. It’s important to note that they do not impose fees on those who benefit from the services. Previously, the activities were carried out in collaboration with CAHO, the Consortium Of Healthcare Organizations, who serve as primary sponsors.

Patient Advisory Councils- a collaboration of patients and providers for common goals

Efforts to promote patient safety and reduce medical errors are essential in healthcare. This involves enhancing communication between patients and healthcare providers, a crucial step in ensuring the quality of care and increasing patient satisfaction. Learning from patient experiences is a valuable source of insights and can improve healthcare delivery.

To achieve these goals effectively, it’s imperative to determine the most effective ways to educate the patient community about their rights, responsibilities, and how to participate in their healthcare decisions actively. This comprehensive approach is integral to creating a safer and more patient-centred healthcare environment.

Conclusion

As we navigate a world where medical errors remain a leading cause of death and disability, PFPSF’s unwavering commitment to patient safety and quality of care is commendable. This initiative recognizes the invaluable insights that patients and their families bring from their own experiences, often overlooked insights. By empowering patients with knowledge about their rights, roles, and responsibilities in healthcare, PFPSF ensures that patients actively participate in their care decisions, resulting in better clinical and psychological outcomes.

The collaboration between patients and healthcare providers, facilitated by PFPSF, promotes a culture of safety and communication in healthcare. The benefits are manifold—improved clinical outcomes, enhanced service results, greater operational efficiency, increased patient satisfaction, and reduced stress for healthcare providers.
