Abstract

SEEM, the Society of Energy Engineers and Managers, recognizes the importance of energy efficiency in the healthcare sector. With a robust presence across the country, SEEM aims to develop a flexible and cost-effective energy audit model specific to hospitals. By establishing benchmarks, comparing against best practices, and providing training programs, SEEM can contribute to sustainability in healthcare.

Journey of SEEM

It is comforting to be aware that CAHO has taken steps to rejuvenate the engineering infrastructure of the hospital. Since its establishment in 2015, CAHO has consistently advocated for and intervened in various sectors to promote energy efficiency. However, the healthcare sector has made limited progress in this regard. Thankfully, we have a detailed plan covering multiple areas, including interstate commerce, healthcare, education, transportation, etc. The actions undertaken by CAHO are perfectly in line with this plan, and previous speakers have already emphasized various aspects of sustainability in healthcare.

Dr Nitin eloquently stressed the importance of conducting energy audits and prioritizing energy efficiency. With this understanding in mind, SEEM is prepared to take concrete steps towards implementation. With a nationwide network of more than 1000 skilled professionals, we can create a versatile and economical energy audit framework. This framework will enable us to set specific benchmarks tailored to different types of hospitals, considering their individual needs and energy usage patterns. We can effectively adopt this approach by refocusing our attention on practical implementation.

We can establish benchmarks, compare them to industry best practices, and even create an index that hospitals can use to improve their performance. These three elements can be accomplished by leveraging our extensive nationwide membership, which comprises experienced professionals in the field. Another critical aspect to consider is the training of engineering personnel within hospitals, which, based on my personal experience auditing various healthcare facilities, has been significantly overlooked compared to awareness sessions for other staff members. SEEM is well-positioned to address this issue due to our widespread presence throughout the country, which helps minimize transportation costs. As a result, we can develop a flexible and cost-effective model for implementing comprehensive training programs.

This is how SEEM can contribute and assist in achieving its own goals in the healthcare sector. Numerous distinguished individuals have already made valuable contributions, and we eagerly anticipate the detailed plans and actions that CAHO will undertake to support healthcare providers throughout India. Our role is to offer our expertise and support in this endeavour.

Conclusion

SEEM is dedicated to utilizing its vast nationwide membership and knowledge to assist healthcare providers in attaining their energy efficiency objectives. Through the implementation of thorough energy audits, the establishment of benchmarks, and the provision of training programs, SEEM can make a substantial contribution to promoting sustainability in the healthcare industry. SEEM eagerly anticipates CAHO’s detailed plans and actions and is excited to offer its expertise and support in this important initiative.
